Velia, la città dimenticata
Velia (SA), a Greek colony
Xavier Malatesta
For those working in the field of cultural heritage, the emergency is the rule, not the exception. The clamor caused by sensational collapse at the site of Pompeii, in fact, surprised not only the employees, such as journalists and politicians. The first, in a society spectacle of it, looking for the surprise, the news effect, the event that displaces, the latter have long preferred to ignore the area that the Constitution should protect and defend: that there is some negligence on the part institutions, however, is innegabilmente vero, ed a decretarlo sono i fatti, non vane accuse letterarie o fantasie di una fazione.
is not the political class that governs it or who has governed: to say this, it would mean the exchange effects for the causes. No, not the politics or the lack of information about the media, is the lack of outrage by our Italian citizens, now without any pride, it seems that in our country we do not care any more, or very vaguely resigned to adagio of a standard "so it always has been," "nothing can change," and so on. The shrug seems to have become the national sport. Not a voice was raised common assertion of a minister that "the culture you do not eat" even seems superfluous to comment on such a clear idiocy, since our country to a strong tourist vocation, wanting to stay down to earth. But, beyond the usual intellectual, one who has not yelled: "What!?"
Before funding, which are essential to the preservation, protection and conservation of our cultural wealth, and that, properly invested, ensure a return greatly increased, and emergency mental. In the civil conscience of every citizen should be genetically love for their heritage, in the broadest sense of the term, because it wants to preserve the past mean better design the future. Instead, the Central Institute for Restoration is under threat of eviction (even if it were a joke), libraries are forced into openings in fits and starts, savagely beautiful landscapes are profaned by the cement, archaeological sites crumble: this is because the money is diverted to initiatives weak and silly, without any foresight, while we allow, with our silence and our inaction, that this destruction takes place continuously, allowing our past fade away in the name of an immediate self-interest and suicidal.
So why tell of yet another site which pays in terms of abandonment? Why say that in the birthplace of important philosophers central to Western culture lacks the money to reopen to the public the only example of an arc greek, extraordinary testimony development project, the entire Magna Grecia, closed for three years for a landslide? And the place where he developed one of the most important medical schools of our country, tradition and then moved to Salerno, where he continued to prosper for centuries, not that we lack one of the holy wells, located in one of the main site, will become, hyperbolically an outbreak of malaria, in the absence of all the maintenance? For those working or interested in the field, each of these questions involves a sharp pang, almost a thick from heart attack and impotence due to the impossibility to act, the absence of pecuniary, but above all the bitterness of the painful silence that surrounds this very slow, constant agony because of our country. If there has been talk of Pompeii for less than a month, if the restoration of the Colosseum, and construction companies contracted to specialized firms, have not attracted any outrage, if the collapse of a stretch of the Tivoli merited only a paragraph in the tenth page of the local newspaper, of course, after the sports news, for those who import of landslides in Velia, a Greek colony remarkable, yet another emblem of Italy in a breakup?
